Latest Microreviews on Metal Gear Solid

9.5Classic!

Excellent gameplay and a riveting story, Metal Gear Solid was an instant classic! Just the fact that the game came with 2 disks indicated time and effort would be required to pass this bad boy. And who doesn't like hiding under cardboard boxes?

10Classic!

the first video game i played where the story and gameplay went perfectly hand in hand. firstly after starting the game you have an amazing looking cutscene that showed what the big grey box was capable of but when you actually started playing thats when you knew you where in for treat. the game wasn't your run in the mill shoot everyone then advance it was tactacle and stratigic making you think about how you where going to progress. every character seemed believable and had a motive (david hayter as solid snake amazing). every boss battle was unique and on occasion made you think (especially how physco mantis messed with you). the story was something you expected to see in hollywood and had you sympaphise with alot of the characters.10/1

10Classic!

One of the greatest games ever made. Amazing story, terrific characters, studding gameplay that lasts hours. Hideo Kojima is a genius, all of his work is gold

One of the greatest games of my childhood. The story is compelling and the characters very loveable. Everyone should play this game.

10/23/98 if michael bay made a videogame, it'd be Metal Gear Solid -- forced us to realize videogames can be art. 10/10

6.5Good

It's got a vibe the sequels don't match, but still, maybe better left in the ol' memory banks than anything; it's pretty disenchanting replaying it and realizing how bad it is in a lot of ways. Also, people praising it up and down for breaking the fourth wall and other bog-deep modernisms says more about video games in general than this one.

10Classic!

Not my favorite Metal Gear Solid in terms of gameplay or story (that would be Snake Eater), but it's easily the one I reminisce about the most. It was the first game I ever played that evoked sincere emotions out of me and the first game I ever played to featured characters I developed strong attachments to. One of the fondest memories I have of MGS, and gaming in general, is the Sniper Wolf battle. I remember the struggling against her as my brother watched on and finally defeating her late at night - probably on my fifth or sixth try.

10Classic!

In the seemingly never-ending debate as to whether games are art or not, MGS is an example I always quote when making the point that, yes, indeed, they can be. It breaks the fourth wall on a regular basis (for instance during the Psycho Mantis fight) and requires the player to reflect on his or her virtual bloodlust on a regular basis. For the sake of sounding hopelessly pretentious, it's probably the first postmodern video game ever made. Oh, and it's rather awesome too.
